Code of Professional
Conduct, ASOPs, Qualification Standards, EA
Regulations –
pension actuaries are surrounded by professionalism
criteria. How can we be sure
that we are meeting all of these requirements? How
does our Code and Professional
Standards benefit us and our clients? Are our Code
and Standards serving their
purpose? What can I and/or my employer do to
mitigate exposure? What should
we do if we make a mistake? What should I do if I
know of a breach of the Code or
Standards? What happens to actuaries who breach the
Code or Standards? In addition
to providing a basic review of the Code, Standards
and ABCD, the presenters at this
session, including current and former ABCD members,
portray a subject actuary,
investigator, and the ABCD Board in a “live”
hearing. Audience members are asked to
analyze, discuss and debate their views of the
hearing and propose what they believe
should be the outcome of the hearing. This seminar
is a great opportunity to get an
update on Professional Standards, while getting a
behind the scenes look at how the
ABCD functions. Consider attending this informative,
retirement benefits focused
seminar on Professional Standards and ethics.

You know the numbers.
You’ve got the credentials. But taking actuarial
exams isn’t
going to make you a great consultant. It’s the
classic issue: what got you here (your
exam success) won’t get you there (success as a
consultant). How do you keep your
career moving and take your consulting skills to the
next level? The presenters at
this seminar focus on the skills needed for success
as a consulting actuary. Put on by
several experienced consulting actuaries, the
session includes a variety of case studies
and exercises in a workshop format, and helps you
identify resources and on-the-job
opportunities to further develop your consulting
skills. This is expected to be a lively
hands-on forum to kick-start your development from
new consulting actuary to client
trusted advisor.
2011 Pension Symposium:
Retirement Security – A Call To Action
Wednesday, March 30, 2:00-6:00 PM
Thursday, March 31, 8:00 AM-Noon
Credits: EA Noncore 8.4 (EA Core Credit TBD)
For decades, the United States’ private pension
system has been the envy of the world. However,
today that very same system is in a state of steady
decline. Many attribute this decline to the
volatile economic conditions of recent years, while
others point out that the decline is rooted in
systemic flaws going back several decades.
Most actuaries are quick to identify the
extraordinary advantages of defined benefit plans in
delivering retirement income, especially in
comparison to defined contributions plans. And so,
there has been considerable professional effort
applied toward examining the causes of the decline
in order to inform possible pathways toward the
revitalizing our DB system.
More recently, others in the profession have chosen
to focus on a clean slate perspective, asking the
question “Knowing what we know today, how would we
design an entirely new and workable private
retirement system from scratch?”
The 2011 Pension Symposium offers attendees an
opportunity to join in the discussion with leading
pension actuaries who have been deeply involved in
these questions for several years. The Pension
Symposium has been an annual fixture following the
EA Meeting since 2005. We intentionally limit
attendance at this session (first come, first
served!) so as to promote dialogue and the sharing
of opinions among all attendees. While we have
distinguished panels of expert practitioners, we
limit their prepared remarks so that we can get
right to the discussion.
In past years, we’ve invited expert practitioners
from outside the profession. We’ve had
representatives from government, think tanks,
academia, organized labor, etc. This year, our
expert panels consist primarily of pension actuaries
who are immersed in the retirement security
question.
The Pension Symposium will be organized around
discussion of the following topics:
·
Causes of the demise of DB plans – and what lessons
we can learn
·
The SOA’s Retirement 20/20 initiative and the
ideas that emerged from the 2010 call for models
process
·
The AAA’s Retirement for the Ages initiative
and the key principles that the Academy has under
consideration
·
The profession’s research, policy and advocacy
initiatives that are all focused on the challenge of
retirement security
Each of these topics is a work in progress!
Attendees participate in a highly interactive
learning environment and have the opportunity to
contribute to the profession’s leadership efforts in
this important national policy area. |
